Breaking Down the Names
- All-on-4 — 4 implants per arch. Popularized by Nobel Biocare. Works for many patients but may not be optimal for everyone.
- All-on-6 — 6 implants per arch. More bone contact, more stability, better load distribution.
- All-on-X — The "X" means the number of implants is customized. Could be 4, 5, 6, or more depending on your bone quality, jaw anatomy, and bite forces.
Why All-on-X Is the Better Framework
The All-on-4 protocol was designed around a marketing number. Not every patient has the same bone structure, bite force, or anatomy. Dr. Noland uses All-on-X because it lets him place exactly the number of implants needed for your jaw — not a preset number driven by a brand name.
In some cases, the ideal solution is 4 implants. In others, it's 6 or even more. The goal is always long-term function, stability, and aesthetics — not hitting a specific number.
