A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is a three-dimensional imaging study of your jaw, teeth, bone, and surrounding structures. It gives me a complete picture of your anatomy before I place a single implant. A traditional 2D X-ray offers one flat angle. It can reveal a cavity or a shadow. What it cannot tell you is bone depth, width, density, nerve location, or sinus proximity, every one of which directly affects where and whether implants can be safely placed.

Planning implant surgery from a 2D X-ray is like navigating a city with a hand-drawn sketch. You might get somewhere, but the margin for error is unacceptably high when we're talking about permanent surgical hardware in your jaw.

What a CBCT Scan Reveals That Changes the Plan

Every CBCT scan I review tells a different story. Here's what I'm looking for:

• Bone volume and density: How much bone is available, and is it dense enough to hold an implant without grafting? This determines implant length, diameter, and angle.
• Inferior alveolar nerve position: In the lower jaw, the nerve runs through the bone. If an implant gets too close, you risk permanent numbness. The CBCT shows exactly where it is.
• Sinus floor proximity: Upper jaw implants must not penetrate the sinus cavity. The scan shows the exact clearance, which dictates implant length and whether a sinus lift is needed.
• Root remnants and pathology: Failed teeth, retained root tips, cysts, and infections invisible on 2D imaging show up clearly in 3D.
• Bone architecture for angled or pterygoid implants: Advanced placements require precise mapping of bone quality in areas standard views never capture.
