Your All-on-X Surgery Day, Hour by Hour

The night before surgery is usually the hardest part, and that is exactly why I want to walk you through the day itself. Almost every nervous patient I meet is not afraid of the outcome. They want the new teeth. What they are afraid of is the unknown, the hours they cannot picture. So let me take the mystery out of it and walk you through All-on-X surgery day from the moment you park to the moment you fall asleep that first night, roughly in the order it happens.

Here is the headline before we start: you arrive with failing or missing teeth, and you leave the same day with a fixed full set of teeth. Everything below is just how we get you there comfortably.

Morning: Arrival and Check-In

You will get here in the morning, and I always ask patients to come with a driver, because you will not be in any shape to drive yourself home later. When you walk in, there is no rush. We are not going to hand you a clipboard and disappear. My team greets you, gets you settled in the chair, and we go over the plan one more time together so nothing is a surprise. If you did your homework at your first implant consultation, this is the same plan you already saw on your own 3D scan, just the real version.

This is the window where questions are welcome. Blood pressure, a review of your medications, a look at the final surgical plan, and honestly a little conversation to get your shoulders down from around your ears. Most people are more anxious in the parking lot than they ever are in the chair. Once we start moving, the waiting is over, and the waiting was the worst of it.

Getting Comfortable: Sedation and Relaxation

Before anything begins, we get you comfortable. Sedation for All-on-X is handled by our dedicated anesthesia provider, whose entire job that day is your comfort and safety while I focus on your teeth. You are monitored the whole time. Most patients drift into a deeply relaxed state and simply are not aware of the procedure happening. You are not lying there gritting your teeth counting minutes. Time compresses, and for most people the surgery feels like it lasts about as long as a nap.

If dental fear is the thing that has kept you out of a dentist's chair for years, you are not unusual, and you are not being dramatic. Midday: The Surgery Itself

While you rest, the surgery happens in one visit. If you still have failing teeth, I remove them. Anything that is broken, infected, or hopeless comes out that day, which means you are not carrying pain and problem teeth home with you. Then I place the implants, the titanium posts that will anchor your new teeth, positioning them in the strongest available bone so they have the best foundation to heal.

This is the part patients imagine as dramatic, and from the outside it is remarkably calm and quiet. It is careful, methodical work. Our practice runs a 98% success rate on these cases, and that number comes from planning, precision, and not cutting corners on the day. I am not racing a clock. I am doing it right, once.

Afternoon: Same-Day Teeth From Our In-House Lab

Here is where having an in-house dental lab changes your entire day. Once the implants are placed, our lab and team go to work fabricating your temporary teeth right here, in the same building, on the same day. There is no shipping impressions to an outside lab and waiting weeks with no teeth. You rest while we prepare a fixed set of temporary teeth designed to attach to your new implants.

There is a wait during this stretch, and I want to be honest that it is a real part of the day, not a five-minute pause. You are comfortable, you are cared for, and the team is moving with purpose the whole time. When the temporary arch is ready, we attach it, check your bite, and make the small adjustments that make it feel right. Then we hand you a mirror.

That mirror moment is my favorite part of this job. People who have hidden their smile for years, who have not bitten into anything in public in longer than they can remember, see a full set of teeth looking back at them. You walk out the same day with fixed teeth, not a cup of dentures and a follow-up appointment.

Evening: The Ride Home and Your First Night

Your driver takes you home in the afternoon or early evening. You will still be groggy from sedation, so the ride home is quiet, and that is fine. Plan to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the day. Head propped up, ice on and off along the cheeks, and the medications we send you home with taken exactly on schedule rather than waiting for discomfort to build.

That first evening you will want soft, cool foods and plenty of rest. Some swelling and oozing is completely normal and expected, not a sign that anything went wrong. Most patients tell me the evening is far more boring than scary, which is exactly what I want for you. Sleep with your head elevated, keep it low-key, and let your body start the healing it is built to do.
