Dental Implants at a Large Chain vs a Private Practice: What Actually Differs

October 9, 2026 Dr. Conner Noland, DDS Heber Springs, AR

If you're weighing a big national name like Aspen Dental or ClearChoice against a smaller private practice for your dental implants, you're already doing the most important thing. You're comparing. That puts you ahead of most people, who book wherever the first ad sent them.

I own a private practice, so yeah, I am biased. I'm going to try hard to be fair anyway. Good dentists work at large chains, and good dentists work in small offices. The building doesn't place the implant. What changes is the structure around the dentist: who you see, what the price covers, and who answers the phone two years from now. So instead of telling you where to go, I'll walk through what actually differs and give you a checklist you can take to any consultation, including ours.

Your Teeth Should Look Like Yours

This is the one I'd put at the top of the list, and it's the one most people don't think to ask about. In a high-volume setting, final teeth are often chosen from a set of stock tooth molds. Small, medium, or large. The arch gets sized to your mouth, and the result is a set of teeth that looks a lot like the last patient's and the next one's. It works, in the sense that you can chew with it. But it was never designed for your face.

We run a boutique practice on purpose, and custom smile design is the center of it. Our lab is inside our building, owned by Jack Noland, and our master ceramist, Jessica Long, shapes every tooth by hand. Before anything is milled, we look at your face, your lip line, the way you talk, the way your jaw moves, and your bite, and we design the teeth around all of that. If you want a little character in a front tooth, or a shade closer to the teeth you had at thirty, that's a conversation we have in person, not a request that goes to a lab in another state.

The best way to see what I mean is our smile gallery. Look through the past cases and notice that no two smiles look the same. Each one was built to fit that patient's face, bite, and personality, and that's the whole point. Ask any provider to show you their past cases and look for the same thing. If every smile looks like it came out of the same mold, it probably did.

Who Plans, Places, and Restores Your Implants

Implant treatment isn't one appointment. It's a plan, a surgery, a healing period, and a final set of teeth that has to fit your bite for years. In some practices of any size, one dentist does the planning, another does the surgery, and a third delivers the final teeth. Sometimes that's handled well. But every handoff is a place where details can get lost.

Here, I'm the one at every step. I place every implant in this practice, from a single tooth to a full arch. I review your 3D scan, plan the case, do the surgery, and deliver your final teeth. If you come back for an adjustment, you see me. That continuity is the other big difference, and it's worth asking any provider about directly. I wrote more about it in who actually places your dental implants.

The other half of that story is the lab. Many practices, large and small, send their cases out to a lab in another city (or country). Ours is inside our building, with Jack and Jessica on every case. When I want to change a tooth's shape or adjust a bite, I walk down the hall. You can read why that matters in the advantage of an in-house dental lab.

What the Price Actually Includes

Implant pricing is confusing everywhere. Some offices advertise a low starting number for one piece of the treatment. Others quote the whole thing. Neither is wrong, but you can only compare them fairly if you know exactly what's inside each number.

Our full-arch quote is all-inclusive and in writing. It covers your consultation and CBCT 3D scan, the surgery with sedation, the implants, same-day temporary teeth, any bone grafting your plan needs, follow-up visits through healing, and your final zirconia teeth made in our lab. You can see typical Arkansas ranges and what drives them on our cost of dental implants page, and a line-by-line answer on our what's included page.

The simple test: ask every office for a written, itemized quote for the whole treatment, start to final teeth. Then compare totals, not starting prices.

Materials: What Your Final Teeth Are Made Of

On surgery day, full-arch patients leave with fixed temporary teeth. Those are made of a strong resin, designed to protect your implants while they heal. Your final teeth are a separate step, and the material matters. Ours are zirconia, which is strong, stain resistant, and can be shaped to look very natural. Ask any provider what your final teeth are made of and whether that's included in the quote.

For most patients, the final teeth come after a healing period of about three to five months of visits, which I explain in temporary vs final implant teeth. For patients who qualify, we also offer a faster path that suits people traveling in from out of town. We go over your medical history by phone, get any medical clearance ahead of time, and then it's a short trip: day one for records and goals, day two for surgery with fixed temporaries, day three to fine tune the fit and bite. About three weeks later, we seat your zirconia teeth. I select patients for that option myself, case by case, and I'll tell you plainly at your consult which timeline fits your case.

Warranty, and Who You Call If Something Goes Wrong

Even with careful planning, a tooth can chip or a bite can need a tweak. That's normal, and it's why the follow-up plan matters as much as surgery day. Our full-arch cases carry a 5-year prosthetic warranty, and you get the written terms before treatment so you know exactly what's covered. Our practice-tracked implant success rate across full-arch cases is 98%. That's not a promise for any one patient, and I'll walk you through what it means.

If something comes up, you call our office in Heber Springs. You're talking to the team that treated you, and the repair happens in our building, not at a lab across the country. Whoever you choose, ask the same thing: if my teeth crack in year three, who do I call, who fixes them, and what will it cost?

How the Consultation Feels

A big decision deserves time. At our free consultation, you sit down with me, look at your own 3D scan, and talk through your goals. You leave with an all-inclusive quote in writing and no deadline attached. Take it home. Sleep on it. Get a second opinion if you want one. Any good provider, anywhere, should be comfortable with that.

If you feel rushed to sign the same day or hear that a price expires tonight, that's a reason to slow down, wherever you are.

Financing

Financing is often listed as a chain advantage, and it's a fair point. But private practices finance too. We work with Proceed Finance and LendingClub Patient Solutions, which both start with a soft credit check, and Cherry, which works well for smaller balances. Before you sign with any lender, ask for the interest rate, the term, the monthly payment, and the total you'll pay. More detail is in our guide to financing dental implants.

Implant Consultation Checklist

  1. Who will plan my case, who will place my implants, and who will deliver my final teeth?
  2. How many implant cases like mine do you treat each month?
  3. Will I get a 3D CBCT scan, and will you show it to me?
  4. Can I have a written, itemized quote for the entire treatment, start to final teeth?
  5. Is bone grafting, sedation, and the final prosthesis included in that number?
  6. Who designs my final teeth, are they custom to my face or chosen from a stock mold, and can I see past cases?
  7. How long until I get my final teeth, and what do I wear in the meantime?
  8. What does your warranty cover, for how long, and can I see the terms in writing?
  9. If something breaks or feels wrong, who do I call, and who fixes it?
  10. Can I take this quote home and think about it, with no deadline?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is getting implants at a large chain cheaper than at a private practice?

Not always. Advertised prices often cover different things, so the only fair comparison is the written total for your whole treatment, from scan to final teeth. At our practice, the full-arch quote is all-inclusive, so the number you see is the number you pay.

Will the same dentist do my surgery and my final teeth?

It depends on the office, so ask. At Noland Implants, yes. Dr. Noland plans your case, places every implant, and delivers your final teeth, with our in-house lab in the same building.

Are dental chains a bad place to get implants?

No. Skilled dentists work at large chains and at small practices. The differences are structural: who you see at each step, whether your teeth are designed for your face or chosen from a stock mold, what the quote includes, where the lab is, and who handles follow-up. Use the same questions at every consultation and compare the answers.

Can I get a second opinion if I already have a quote from a chain?

Yes. Bring your quote and any scans you have. Our consultation is free and includes a CBCT 3D scan, a conversation with Dr. Noland, and a written, all-inclusive quote you can compare side by side.

How long do dental implants last?

Dr. Noland plans every surgery so implants can hopefully last a lifetime, but the honest national average is 15 to 20 years. Longevity depends heavily on home care, regular follow-up visits, and wearing a nightguard if one is recommended.

What financing options does a private practice offer?

We work with Proceed Finance and LendingClub Patient Solutions, which both start with a soft credit check, and Cherry for smaller balances. Financing is subject to lender approval and terms.
